Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about joining Melbourne's watch collector exchange.

We use a secure third-party verification service that checks your government-issued ID (Australian driver's licence or passport) against public records. The process takes under 2 minutes and your data is encrypted end-to-end. Once verified, you can immediately start buying and selling.

Registration and browsing are completely free. When you complete a sale, we charge a 3.5% platform fee (capped at $500 AUD per transaction). Escrow services are included at no extra cost. There are no hidden fees, listing fees, or monthly subscriptions for standard members.

When you agree on a price, the buyer transfers funds to our secure escrow account. The seller ships the watch to the buyer. The buyer has 48 hours to inspect the timepiece. Once confirmed, funds are released to the seller. If there's a dispute, our mediation team steps in to resolve fairly.

Currently our platform is open to Australian residents with a verified Australian address. International sellers may join once we expand our verification system later this year. All listings must comply with Australian consumer law and customs regulations.

We partner with certified horologists in Melbourne who can authenticate your watch before listing. Services include movement inspection, case and dial verification, and originality assessment. Premium authentication costs $89 AUD and includes a detailed report with photographs.

Risk Disclosure

Important Risk Information: Trading in pre-owned watches involves significant financial risk. This disclosure outlines key risks you should consider before buying or selling on Melbourne Watch Exchange. This information is general in nature and does not constitute financial advice.

Market Risk: Watch values fluctuate based on market demand, economic conditions, brand reputation, and collector trends. Prices can decrease substantially over time. Past performance or sales history does not guarantee future value. A watch purchased today may be worth less in the future.

Authenticity Risk: Despite our verification processes, there is always a risk of counterfeit or modified timepieces. We recommend independent authentication for high-value purchases. Our authentication reports are professional opinions and not guarantees of originality.

Liquidity Risk: Watches are not liquid assets. It may take weeks or months to sell a timepiece at your desired price. You may need to accept a lower price to complete a sale quickly. There is no guarantee that a buyer will be found for your listing.

Condition Risk: Watches are mechanical devices subject to wear, damage, and servicing needs. Hidden defects may not be apparent at the time of sale. Servicing costs can be substantial and should be factored into your purchase decision.

Counterparty Risk: While we verify all members and provide escrow services, there is always a risk of disputes or non-compliance by other users. Our dispute resolution process aims to be fair but cannot guarantee outcomes.

Regulatory Risk: Changes in Australian laws regarding second-hand goods, consumer protection, or financial services could impact the platform or your transactions. We will notify members of material regulatory changes.

No Guarantees: Melbourne Watch Exchange does not guarantee profits, returns, or successful transactions. You should only trade with funds you can afford to lose. We strongly recommend consulting a qualified financial advisor before making significant collectible purchases.

By using this platform, you acknowledge that you understand and accept these risks. For further information, contact us at risk@melbournewatch.com.au. This disclosure was last updated March 2025.
